The monument, aptly named\u00a0<em>Missing Airmen<\/em>, commemorates all Allied pilots and crew members who lost their lives or went missing after crashing into the IJsselmeer during World War II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The monument stands at the site where the body of Scottish pilot Thomas Fraser McCrorie washed ashore. His aircraft was shot down near Den Oever on June 23, 1943.
