‘Missing Airmen’ monument transported

Near the Frisian village of Molkwerum, on the shores of the IJsselmeer, a four-meter-high wing has emerged from the water since last Friday. The monument, aptly named Missing Airmen, commemorates all Allied pilots and crew members who lost their lives or went missing after crashing into the IJsselmeer during World War II.

The monument stands at the site where the body of Scottish pilot Thomas Fraser McCrorie washed ashore. His aircraft was shot down near Den Oever on June 23, 1943. All seven crew members were killed; only two were ever recovered from the lake.

Omrop Fryslân made a beautiful report on the event: Omrop Fryslân – Monument voor omgekomen piloten
