Town hall tower removed

Last weekend, the spire of the Bolsward town hall tower was dismantled. Due to severe damage caused by the common furniture beetle, it was decided that the entire tower needed to be removed immediately. Today, the remaining sections of the tower were also taken down and transported by ship to Sneek.

The 400-year-old building was already scheduled for restoration, but after inspection, the tower turned out to be in much worse condition than expected. The culprit the furniture beetle is particularly fond of oak wood and had eaten through the structural beams.

Under the watchful eyes of many local residents, the tower was carefully dismantled as quickly as possible. Today, the section containing the clock was removed. The two lower parts of the tower were transported through Marktstraat, Dijkstraat, and Bargefenne to the Stoombootkade, where they were lifted onto a cargo vessel. The tower measures nine metres in height and weighs around 150 tons, and was therefore removed in three separate sections.
